Ear reshaping (otoplasty)

Protruding ears are a facial characteristic, which does need plastic surgery more than any other cosmetic pathology. Generally speaking children are the most likely candidates for ear correction, but otoplasty can be performed at any age after the ears have finished developing. We always advise an early cosmetic surgery correction to stop the child to become the victim of cruel nicknames. This is could be a problem leading to self-consciousness and poor social integration. Adults may also be candidate for ear correction, which usually improves them self-image.

Technically speaking, otoplasty takes approximately two hours to perform. As an outpatient, patients will be placed under sedation or general anesthesia. A small incision will be made at the back of the ear. Then, the cartilage in the ears will be reshaped and the ear will be held in position by permanent stitches. The degree of reshaping will be assessed during prior to otoplasty surgery, so it's important that you discuss with your surgeon your expectation and explain your desired shape during the first consultation. The healing is usually quicker than many other cosmetic procedures. Bandages will be applied to the ears and patients may feel some discomfort as the local anesthesia wears off.

Normally, patients are able to see the cosmetic out come of their ear correction surgery or otoplasty within three days, after removal of the dressing. We always advise the patient to avoid any physical activity, which could compromise the recovery. Stitches are usually removed after one week. We instruct our patients to wear a headband at night for an additional three weeks. Most adult patients are allowed to return to work after about 5 days; children can go back to school after about one week.

Risks associated with ears correction or otoplasty include bleeding, infection and asymmetry of the ears.
