Dermabrasion
The word dermabrasion comes from “derm” meaning skin, and “abrasion” which is a term for a sort of damage where the surface of the skin is scraped off. Dermabrasion is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to improve scars or soften facial wrinkles. Dermabrasion, similar to chemical peeling or laser treatment, is a technique which smoothes the top layer of skin and trigger new collagen formation and new skin re-growth. For deep upper lip wrinkles, dermabrasion is the treatment of choice. Also the surgical scars could be improved when treated with Dermabrasion. Usually, the scars become smoother and change to finer and less noticeable results.
How does it Work?
Generally the cosmetic surgeon uses a hand-held device with a rotating metal wheel, diamond fraise to peel off the superficial skin. This cosmetic surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. Usually, the plastic surgeon prepares the target area with antiseptic solution to prevent infection. Dermabrasion can take between a 30 minutes to 2 hours.
After the surgery
Dermabrasion is a difficult cosmetic treatment with a slow recovery. We always advise our patients not to smoke for one week after treatment or to use make-up during the first 7 days. We also advise not to: use Retin-A for four weeks, no aspirin or ibuprofen for one week, no physical activity for 4 weeks, no sun exposure for at least 3 months. After dermabrasion cosmetic treatment, the patient may feel the skin severely burnt or brushed for a couple of days. Pain relievers will often be recommended to reduce discomfort after the treatment. The healing process for this type of cosmetic treatment would normally take around ten days. The new layer of the skin would be pink in color at first and would develop the normal skin tone gradually. Generally the pinkness would fade away within six weeks. Makeup may be used for covering up the skin once the new layer of the skin gets healed. In most cases, patients would be able to resume their day-to-day work within a week or two post dermabrasion cosmetic treatment. The patients would be advised to avoid indirect or direct contact with sunlight for up to six months post treatment. Use of sunscreen on a regular basis would be required.
